It was whiplash—this whole, entire thing. Dick had been stunned into silence before. He’d been shocked, thrown off-balance, taken hits that knocked the wind out of him but none of it really compared to this. Not the part where Jason called him out for kidney damage (hah—he’s seen Jason take bullets quieter than this), not the casual suggestion of coffee, and not even the fact that Tim had feelings.
The part that knocked him over was the suggestion of sharing, the way Tim fluttered his lashes at it, that sent Dick’s mind reeling with a sudden flood of possibilities, like it could really just work. He stared at that outstretched hand and toyed with the idea of actually believing that it wouldn’t hurt to try.
“I sort of imagined something like this a hundred times but I told myself it could never happen.” His voice came out a little hoarse, maybe a little too honest as he looked from Tim’s hand to Jason, who casually sipped his hot cocoa on the couch, then back to Tim’s eyes. Slowly, he took Tim’s hand, stared at their joined fingers for a beat too long.
“You two…have always had a way of turning my world upside down.” He looked at Jason again. “Jay? I—don’t wanna screw things up for either of you, I meant what I said.” But the hope was clear in his eyes, in the warm, molten chocolate hue. Yes, he heard how easily Jason suggested that Dick take Tim out on a date, but even still, he wanted assurance. The idea of sharing a lover was a foreign one to Dick, but it didn’t feel wrong when he imagined that it would be with Jason, someone both he and Tim trusted with their whole lives.
“We can both see Tim sometimes. I'd never try to take him away from you, we’ll work it out.” Because there was no way Jason also wanted him too…right?
