They both had to drive home, yes. But, more importantly, Jason wasn't going to let Jon out of his sight without at least a little aftercare. The man had tried to refuse it at first, but Jason had put his foot down rather sternly. He'd refused to do so much as touch the man without Jon first agreeing to the minimum of aftercare. Water, some carbs to keep his blood sugar up, a few minutes of coming down off the high of the scene to let his mind recenter itself while Jason was still there as a safety net in case that mind tried to spiral on itself instead.
Over the years he'd added basic treatment of wounds left behind. Touches that Jon could tolerate to help ground him as he came back up. More often than not, their aftercare tended to be Jason sitting up against the bed in the room, Jon encouraged to lay in his lap -or at least near him- while Jason lightly played in his curls and read aloud from a book they'd picked out together.
This month was no different. Jon let go of those last little slips of control and Jason smiled and leaned forward to kiss along exhaustion lines, murmuring how good he was, how well he'd taken everything Jason had to give him. He'd released the man from the ropes, keeping him close so he didn't fall at the sudden change in position. Moving over to the bed, he made sure Jon took a few sips of the water bottle he'd left there just for this before he'd started massaging abused shoulders into once more accepting blood flow.
"How many chapters tonight? Just the one? Or are you going to actually take advantage of the fact that we have the room all night for once?" He smirked, knowing full well that Jon was never actually going to stay. It didn't stop him from adding incentive, his voice a teasing sing-song that he was pretty sure was going to earn him an eye roll. "We could get to them actually getting to Vegas...."
Jon still tries to escape sometimes, but he doesn't push the hard lines when Jason puts his foot down. Occasionally, the aftercare makes him feel uncomfortable, but, logically, he knew it was important. Simply, not something he feels he deserves. He is lucky that the young sex worker makes sure he keeps the carbs up and remembers to drink some water. He so often forgets wrapped up in his work, and it helps him bounce back for the drive home, as he has never once stayed until morning.
Cleaning the wounds was something he didn't fight, he insisted on doing the same on the few rare nights he has hurt Jason in return. Those are bad nights that usually end much better than they start. If asked before all of this if he was attracted to muscular men, he would have said no, but getting to relax against that strong chest against the thick thighs? He had been converted.
The book was already on the table, if Jon or Jason kept it to bring each time didn't matter, but he enjoyed it. Occasionally, he would read while Jason played with his hair, making voices for each character. Tonight would likely be one of those nights.
A huffed noise, from how stiff his shoulders were, escaped as he dropped a bit against Jason's strong chest. His wrists might bruise, but he never minded that, always reminding that he wore an old wristwatch, and a leather cuff for a reason. He'd blame being in college in the early 2000s if anyone questioned the cuff. Moving easily with him to the bed as Jon took a second to pop his shoulder before taking a few drinks. Once he was sitting on the bed so that Jason could check over any marks. Jon reached for the book, those icy blue eyes peered up and rolled as expected.
"Lovely as the offer always sounds, I have work in the morning." Opening the book to skip to where they left off. "You are always welcome to stay since it is booked for the night. I don't care. We will get to Vegas when we get there, why rush it?" He always talked a little more after a scene than he ever does before. As if the rush of pain uncovers the person buried under all that stress.
The rush of pain did uncover the person. Stress melted away under it, leaving the otherwise stiff man pliant against him in a way that Jason was pretty sure he never allowed himself to be with anyone else. It was an honor to get to be that for Jon and Jason never failed to smile as the angular man settled in against him.
"Mmm, no rush. A little greedy, maybe, but I'm plenty patient." He waited until Jon had situated himself somewhere comfortable, ignoring the offer to let him stay without his client. He'd never taken said offer just as Jon had never taken the offer to stay, but it was always appreciated.
As soon as the book opened and Jon was comfortable, Jason sank his fingers into dark curls. Before, he'd use that handful as a handle to wrench the man to exactly where he wanted him, but that time had passed and now Jason's fingers were gentle as he stroked them through the softness. Any snags were carefully worked free and occasionally Jason would stroke his fingers against the skin of Jon's neck or jaw.
It was a shorter chapter that night, but Jason was satisfied with how Jon was coming back to himself and instead of insisting on another one, he instead just leaned down to kiss combed through curls.
"Text me when you get home. I'll call for check in tomorrow. Make sure to eat something, I'll be asking about it. It will probably be around two, but if you're busy you can call me back when you have a minute. Got it, Doc? Don't make me call every five minutes, you know I will." He'd done it before.
He was right, no one else had ever had that honor. Jon always expected to be hurt by anyone he let close. That was why this worked. As long as money flowed to Jason, he could keep it as a business transaction in his mind. Granted, he had never heard of many sex workers who called with reminders to eat and wanted to know when they got home. Yet, he didn't mind. It was not like he had friends or the like.
"Plenty greedy, my ravenous friend. Though, I give you that, you can be very patient." The professor would sometimes jokingly call Jason a friend after the pain when the masks were down. It was more his way of thinking than really thinking they are. The stroking hand in his hair almost put him to sleep once in the reading, but that was fine. He enjoyed the feel of it.
When the chapter was finished, he marked the page and held it up to Jason, he'd let him keep the book until next month. Just so it didn't get lost in his stacks at home.
Pushing himself up after the kiss landed in his messy curls, a light, softer look offered back at the younger as he reached for the t-shirt and button up he had worn in. He dressed casually whenever he came, he could replace a t-shirt he would rather not replace a suit. Tugging on the black shirt, he nodded. Slipping his watch back on next. "I will text as soon as I get home. Don't worry. I've not forgotten in a few months." Pants grabbed next as he stood doing up his belt again.
Shaking his head amused, curls bouncing a little from the way Jason broke up the clusters. "Christ, never do that again." He gave a small laugh turning to ruffle Jason's hair, and even giving him a quick kiss. Taking out his phone then to transfer the funds. He always does before he leaves. "I'll remember to eat, good luck with whatever tomorrow is, I'll see you next time, Jason."
Grabbing his boots to slip on, he never ties them before he leaves, to head for the door.
But weren't they? Unconventional, sure, but Jason was still exceptionally fond of the older man who'd become one of his most regular clients. He worried when he didn't hear from him for too long, always got a little spring in his step when he saw Doc's name appear on his schedule. Jon needed the separation of the business transaction and Jason gave it to him, but he still took the extra steps to make sure that Jon hadn't fallen asleep behind the wheel or hadn't started to spiral after sleeping.
Checking in was a Dom's expectation, but he'll admit that he checked in a little more on his Doc.
He watched the lanky man dress, occasionally reaching out to stroke his fingers over skin before it was once more covered with clothing, and then he was leaning up into that quick kiss. "Any time you need me, Doc. Just a phone call away." Then the door was closed and Jason was left to scrub down the room and return the keys to Pandora. Somewhere in there, his phone buzzed to let him know that Jon had made it home alright and Jason had replied with a simple 'Sleep well, Doc. Talk to you tomorrow' before he'd hit play on his music to finish up his cleaning.
The next morning found him tired but pleasantly centered considering he was about to do something that terrified him. Still, centered or not, it took several deep breaths before he was able to actually convince himself to walk through the GSU doors, hiking his brand new bag up a little higher on his shoulder as he moved through the crowd of fresh faced freshmen. He was the oldest by far and more than a few of his peers gave him curious looks as they were walked through their orientation tour of the campus.
They were unconventional, but as much as he appreciated all the little extras his dom gives. He refused to think of them as friendship. He needed that divide to not let himself grow expectant. He never expected aftercare, to be asked to check in, or to be reminded to eat. He appreciated them, but he wouldn't be upset if Jason didn't do those things now and then. Maybe a little worried, but he'd not admit it.
The first day of a new year was always hell for Crane. He once loved walking into this building, knowing he would be learning and one day become somebody. Once he pulled off becoming the youngest professor in the school's history, that was when the magic died for him. He saw behind the curtains, and it was nothing he had expected. Rude coworkers who belittled him for his lack of modern cut suits or spending frivolously on making himself look better. Being bullied was nothing new for Jonathan Crane. He just expected it to be different here.
It wasn't. Added with the fact that half of his students didn't even try? The doctor had been bittered within a few years of getting the role. He had only reached tenure the year before, much to the displeasure of his former mentor and his cronies. Crane kept to himself, worked, and then went home and work more or read. He didn't socialize and he rarely took excuses.
The freshmen were being given their tour, but the other grades were being given their first classes. It just so happened that it was Crane's second class when the freshmen were led through. "As I said, you turn in any assignment, even a minute late, and do not have a doctor's note or a death certificate. I will shred it. If you fall asleep in my class? You will be asked to leave, and I will not allow you to make up any points. Sleep is for home or out in your cars. Not in my classroom. I also do not give extra credit. Don't ask." He was still talking as the guide whispered to the group.
"That's professor Crane, he's brilliant, but just hope you don't get his class." One of the others, rolled their eyes. "Crane's not that bad, if you do your work and don't mess around. He was my professor for two years." The first tour group leader rolling their eyes at the second one. "Okay, follow along."
Jason Todd came from nothing and nowhere. He was the only child of a poor family, lost in the cracks of Gotham's public school system. When he was able to go, he'd loved every second of it, drinking in the information as fast as he could get his hands on it. He was quiet, rarely made a fuss, never raised his hand to offer answers or ask questions...the perfect student for no one to notice when he went missing for weeks at a time. Or when he wore long sleeves and jeans on days when the other students ran around in shorts and tank tops.
Then, when he was nine, he'd gone into the Gotham foster system and no one bothered to look at him again.
The dream of going to college was one he'd never dared to have, and yet...there he was. It had taken blood, sweat, and tears as well as more years than he really wanted to think about, but he was there. Taking that freshman tour. His skin crawled with the tight press of nervous teenagers around him, but he wasn't going to let himself fall to the back and not be able to hear the guides.
Or hear the familiar voice that made his breath catch in his throat. The accent was different, husky Georgian drawl replaced by a crisp Bristol posh...but it was him. His Doc, lecturing a hall of students that looked simultaneously terrified and bored of him. He didn't stare. Didn't smile, though it threatened the corners of his lips. He saw the man, let his eyes take in the scene, and then smoothly transitioned back to the guides.
He was a professional, after all. He wasn't going to out his Doc in front of his students. He did, however, take a moment as they moved on to take note of exactly where the classroom was and the subject that was stamped above it.
Psychology
Fascinating. Suddenly, the press of the students around him didn't seem so crushing after all.
The tour ended not long before Jason was supposed to call for a check in, just as Jason had planned it. While the rest of the freshmen scattered to find their first actual classes of the day, Jason headed for the little coffee shop/cafe vender that was tucked off to one side of the public commons. It was quiet and he appreciated that quiet as he got himself a tea and a muffin, then made his way over to a table before pulling out his phone and pressing 'call'.
Jon had never once looked in to the worker he had grown close to over the last few years. He expected privacy, and returned that respect. Always firm on giving back what you are given. Nothing in life is free. He assumed Jason was from a broken home, all things considered, but he never dug.
It would be unethical for one. He still cared about the ethics of his professional role these days.
Standing before his class, dressed in a brown suit. Every mark from the night before hidden. Those blue eyes steeled, his hair styled as it usually was at the start of their scenes. The curls always had a mild of their own. No one would guess what the professor gets up too when he has the money and time. His natural accent hidden, as he firmly felt no one would take him seriously with his natural accent. Yet, he never tried to kill that smooth southern accent. It came in handy now and then.
Hours later, he was in his office. Reading a novel at his desk as he worked on his 4th cup of coffee, and a muffin he had grabbed earlier. Seeing the familiar picture and name pop up, he couldn't help the fond smile and rolling his eyes as he answered. His accent back to the Georgian as he pushed looked up to make sure his office door was shut.
"I'm eattin' I promise. I didn't forget today, Jason. Did you take care of whatever it was you were doing?"
No 'hello', no greeting at all. Just that smooth drawl and a quiet fondness that made Jason's lips finally curl up into the smile that he'd denied himself earlier. That was his Doc and it was perfect.
Leaning back in his chair, he let his smile be heard in his chuckle.
"Good." Praise for the action, not to the man. He knew how flustered and uncomfortable Jon could get if praised directly outside of a scene. But a job well done was something that could be commented on without shining a light on the insecurities that his sub tried so hard to hide away. "Food is important. Have you had any actual water today, or has it all been coffee?"
He arched a brow even though Jon wasn't there to see it, but it was as fond as ever as he sipped at his own hot, caffeinated beverage.
"I'm actually on a break. I've got the next 40 minutes to myself, so I wanted to check in. How are you? Did you sleep well?"
It was rare to get a hello, sometimes it happened, but generally, it was when the call was unexpected. Jonathan could almost hear the smile in that one word, sitting back in his chair before taking a drink of coffee.
"You don't like when I lie to you." He replied with ease. "I'll get some water once I'm off work. Alright?" He offered, amusement in his tone. Jason knew how to walk around his moodiness and that helped. It made him feel better without feeling like he was being handled with kid gloves.
"Ironically, I have the same amount of time. Imagine that." He didn't think much of it besides the irony of it. "Slept about as well as I ever do, but I am fine. Work is annoying as always, but that won't change. Did you sleep well?" Even if Jason was the dom, sometimes Jon liked to check in too. Wanting to return those extra perks in the only way he knew how.
"You're right, I don't like it when you lie to me." But he was still grinning, tone easy and smooth as he shook his head. "If you have that same amount of time, you have enough time to find a water bottle. Please? For me?" Because if he made it about Jon, the stubborn man would just dig in his heels. But if he made it about himself...
Well, his dear Doc was a bit of a service sub in disguise.
"Mmm. I'd like to think that anything has the potential to be better. Who knows, maybe something interesting will happen.
As for me...not really. I hate crowds and today marks the first day that I have to be in the middle of a very crowded place on a daily basis. It kept me up a bit later than I wanted to be, even as tired as you left me."
That got a bit of chuckle from the older man. "I suppose I could do that, after I finish my coffee, of course. I am certain you understand." He needed that caffeine if he were to survive the first day. Making it about Jason made it easier to stomach, and he was less likely to fight back.
He would fight against such a label, but it was very true.
"I sometimes wish I could see through those rose-tinted lenses you see the world through." Something he has said before, always the pessimist when it came to his world views. "Something else we share in common. Well, I wish you the best with whatever this new venture is. Just remember, even if it is annoying, it can be rewarding too." A flush taking over his face some at the last bite. "The things you say..."
For a moment, he was tempted to tell the man that he'd seen him earlier. That he was now attending classes in the same building, even. It would be the ethical thing to do, but he knew that the moment he did, Jon would pull away. Maybe even drop their contract all together. And that was entirely his right to do that....
But Jason would miss him. Jason didn't want to break their contract. And this was just a check in call, right? As long as he was honest before Jon scheduled their next scene, it would be okay. At least, that was what he was going to tell himself.
So, instead of chuckling about Jon's addiction to coffee, he let his voice slip into that lower register he used when they were alone and Jon was panting and shaking and Jason was soothing him through something that would be pure agony for most, but for them was foreplay. "Mmm, that blush I can hear in your voice is music to my ears, Doc." He let his words and his tone play a little in Jon's mind before he grinned and eased up his teasing enough to not fluster the man too much.
"Don't forget your water, alright? If you need me, I'm only a phone call away. Remember that. See you next session."
It was probably for the best Jason kept that to himself, at least until Jon saw him, or they were to meet again for another session. As long as Jason stayed out of his class and was older than most of his students, it would most likely be fine. He was far too at ease with his scene partner to want to find someone new.
That lower register sent a jolt up his spine. Oh god, not here. "Come on now, I have to return to work soon enough. Must you?" No real bite, but the embarrassment still in his tone. He hated how easily flustered he could get. It was all due to his upbringing and that ignored religious trauma.
"I won't, I promise. Same to you, even if I do not answer right away. Good luck with whatever it is. I know you will do good. Ignore the crowds, all that matters is you and your success, remember that."
"That is some excellent advice, my dear Doc. Too bad you refuse to listen to it." He chuckled softly, closing his eyes as he let himself relax into the seat. It felt good to let that tension go, Doc's voice a welcome relief in his ear. The call itself wouldn't last long, but the stolen moments would no doubt be what got him through the rest of his day.
Which, for the most part, went smoothly enough. He only had one class that could be considered 'close' to Doc's lecture hall and he pointedly didn't let himself linger to listen to that strong voice behind the closed door.
He was a professional. Jon was a client.
But he still made a point of stopping the next following morning before the first posted class time listed, not to linger or see the man, but instead to simply leave a half frozen bottle of water on the podium, a paper towel neatly folded to catch the condensation.
Jason earned a chuckle at the retort. The professor knew he was a hypocrite on the best of days. Those little stolen moments made bad days a little more bearable. Once the call ended, Jonathan finished the muffin, found some water and once that was done he and his coffee returned to the lecture hall for the rest of the grueling day.
At least there would be a new episode of Elvira tonight. That always helps, they are so rare these days. Jon didn't pay for his cable, his sketchy neighbor had set him up with it in exchange for helping one of his kids with her math homework when he and his wife got fed up. It wasn't a terrible exchange, the girl was at least smart, her parents? Not so much.
The next morning, when he arrived, his classes always started a little later as he refused to have a class at the crack of dawn. No, he opted to stay later, allowing for some of those students to try to squeeze in that class on top of their others. Seeing the bottle of water, he stared at it a moment like a snake about to strike. What in the world?
Moving the bottle of water and its paper towel into his office as he had a cup of coffee with him, he knew he'd have to keep an eye on whatever that was. He would drink it, though, Jason would likely call later and ask if he had time. This was how his first week back would go, the frightening his new students with how strict he was. Promises of no extra credit, as most of them never cracked the syllabus and learned that was a lie. This was one of those weeks when he wishes he got paid early to call upon his dom, but he had another week before that, and bills due before that as well.
As first weeks went, it wasn't the worst. The crowds weren't nearly so bad without the group activity of the freshmen tour and what people were still around to mill in the halls were usually so involved in their own thing that they barely noticed Jason was there. He didn't look that out of place when he wasn't stacked in with a bunch of literal teenagers, after all. He was closer to thirty than he was to twenty, but he looked young enough.
Sneaking in to place that half frozen water on Doc's podium became a guilty pleasure, a smile on his lips every time he slipped into the quiet lecture hall. He never let anyone see him, didn't linger as he left, and completely left his Doc's office door alone. Just leaving the water was already crossing a bit of a line, if he were to be honest with himself. Hopefully not one that would lose him his favorite client, but instead one that might coax a smile from the other man should he find out.
That was the hope, anyway.
By the time Friday came around, Jason was ready for the weekend. His nerves were a little shot from all the hustle and bustle and people. His schedule was empty, but that wasn't a shock. Once he'd enrolled in the semester, he'd stopped taking most of his casual clients. He still had a small handful of those he'd think about accepting....but mostly, he'd just kept Doc. Not that Doc would be calling him any time soon. They'd had a session just five days before and it was always at least a month between calls. He wasn't expecting a call now.
Even if he really, really wanted one. Getting his hands on his sub sounded like a wonderful way to relax after this hellish week. It was a thought that lingered....and very well may have been the reason he wasn't quite as careful as he usually was as he slipped into that empty lecture hall and set the brand new orange and black Stanley onto the podium. No more condensation and the ice he put in it would last all day, encouraging the man to drink more. He hoped. And, if Jon was particularly observant, there was a thin engraving on the inside of the handle.
The frozen bottles of water were a mystery Crane wanted to solve. He would normally think it was a student trying to earn points, but no. It was too early in the semester for that. Next to none of his coworkers even spoke to him, short of the librarian, or Henry when he wanted to berate some choice of Jonathan's. It was such a shame their friendship had soured. He used to adore that man, but over the years they had become more rivals than anything else.
Though, Jon would never share why.
He had arrived to work late on that Friday, late for him was still before his students would arrive. His messenger bag over his shoulder, a cup of coffee in hand along with a cheap breakfast sandwich as it was a rare hungry morning. Seeing the Stanley cup on the podium he looked at it for a good moment like it was going to attack. What in the hell is this?
He had a few students who he had heard bragging about the prices of the cups like that one. The Professor thought it was mostly stupid, Stanley was a good brand. He had an old second hand vintage one he used on cold days when he wanted his coffee to stay warm, but this? Someone spent money on him, and there was no denying that.
Tempted to throw it away, he fought the urge, as he left it where it was to get ready for class. He had left it there through the first lecture, finally as his first class let out, one of the more chipper students that didn't really fear him bounced over complimenting the cup, letting him know it was a rare one, but one that suited him. Before he could even say anything else she had her phone out showing him all the accesories that could be bought for it.
"It's a cup... why would anyone need all of that?" "It's for style Doc! Come on, you have to know that." "Not really, but thank you, Miss Peterson." "Of course! You really should get one of the pumpkin tops, it would be SO cute." "That's quite enough." He sighed as she finally headed off and waved back to him. He had to fight not to roll his eyes.
It was then, due to how she had shifted the cup that he saw the engraving. "What..." Was all he managed to say. He had less than 10 minutes before his next class, so he couldn't message his scene partner. No, that message was clear. He knew the names and faces of everyone in his class, so he would have noticed Jason there.
When lunch rolled around, a message was sent to Jason.
I believe we need to talk, Jason. Before I cause you any anxiety, I am not terminating our contract, nor am I setting up a session. We simply need to speak. I found the engraving. I know it's you.
Jon was absolutely right. Jason wasn't in any of his classes. In fact, he only walked down the same hallway once, not including his adventures in watering his resident grump. But when that message chimed on Jason's phone, he couldn't help his smile.
Doc was probably at least a little irritated with him....but he'd specifically said that he wasn't terminating their contract and that was the important part.
Full naming me, huh? Yeah, I don't blame you. I should have said something as soon as I found out, but I didn't know how or if you'd break our contract and I wasn't ready to say good bye to you. I won't ask for forgiveness, I crossed a line, but I will dare to hope for understanding?
I'm in my break between my AM and PM classes for another hour, but then I'll be in class until 7. Tomorrow is free, once I sleep until noon. Lunch?
They'd never met up outside of Pandora's Box, but that was bound to change with him attending classes there now. It may as well change on their terms.
He should have put his phone down, but after a moment he smirked around the end of the pen in his mouth and sent a quick follow up.
The doctor knew if he didn't state that, he'd probably send Jason into a panic. As strong as his dom was, he could see cracks all through the other. Ones that his education made easier to help patch without bringing too much attention too it.
Irritated was the right word for it. Furious would have been termination, but many things irritated Dr. Jonathan Crane. That was a fact of life.
Did you expect anything less? Jason, we can talk it over later. As it is, I know you are of age, and you are not my student. That and the years we have worked together are what keeps me from doing what you fear. Crossed a line? Maybe. More, I have questions.
That works, I have grading to do tonight as it is. 2pm, how about that place down in the Bowery, the gentrified place they built in the old cannery?
It had coffee that had good reviews, Jon also slept in on days he was off, so that was fine. If Arkham called tomorrow, he'd say he was sick. Jerry wouldn't bitch too much.
I'm drinking the damn water, stop worrying. Focus on your classes.
Jon's chosen field of profession hadn't escaped his attention. It made sense, his Doc's meticulous nature a boon in such an environment. He was curious to know what his sub's professional mind thought about him and the tells he'd allowed himself to give over the years, but he'd never ask. Not only was it unprofessional, but he was also a little nervous about what the man would say.
The man had chosen to come back to him over the years, so it must not have been too bad, and that was good enough for him.
The suggestion of lunching spots was an interesting one and Jason arched a brow as he quickly pulled the place up on his laptop. It was...a little kitschy, but it looked like it was at least trying to pay homage to the area it was built in.
2 pm tomorrow. I'll answer anything you ask and respect any boundary you have for me. If you want to return the cup, you can, but I will ask you to please keep it. It was a gift, with no strings attached. Not even water flavored ones.
~~~
Sleep was fickle that night, but the next day found him tucked into a little table at 2 PM. He'd specifically requested a table that was a little out of the way, but the space was set up in such a way that Doc would still be able to see him when he came in. They'd have privacy as long as they kept their conversation between them and no one raised their voice.
He was really hoping that no one was going to raise their voice.
Dressed in a simple pair of dark jeans and an old, comfortable band shirt, it was probably the most casual that Jon had ever seen him. Hell, it was probably the best lighting that the man had seen him in, too. Pandora kept her establishment and her workers safe, but mood lighting was still very much a thing. A book and a large mug of what promised to be tea completed the look, though he was flipping the pages considerably slower than he usually did.
While the sub could be very unprofessional at times, and did psychoanalyze his dom often, he didn't voice it. It was not his place. He did randomly still care about the ethics of his chosen profession. Even if he wouldn't say it.
The location might be sketchy as hell, but it was picked due to Jon living down the street from it in a shitty two-bedroom apartment. The professor had long learned that getting along with some of his sketchy neighbors meant that no one really fucked with him. Otherwise, someone else would step up and handle it. He'd not been mugged coming home in a long while. Though, he did still keep his gun in the truck, as one never knew. Gotham was still Gotham, after all.
Jon had managed three hours of sleep, which for him was pretty good. He survived on naps when not put to sleep after an orgasm and a lot of pain. Those nights, he'd sleep like the dead. Making his way towards the door, he stopped to stoke the head of his young bird. "Keep an eye on the place, Nightmare. I'm trusting you." The bird croaked a simple 'Nevermore' as Jon headed out, with the Stanley Cup full of water. Lest Jason worried more.
He arrived about 10 minutes after Jason, he was always late, even to their sessions. Work was the ONLY exception to that rule, but one could set a clock by his tardiness, always 10 minutes, rarely more unless Gotham traffic was a bitch. He usually wore his nicer street clothes to Pandora's or part of a work suit, as he knew he'd be turned away if he showed up ratty. Today, though, he didn't mind. The doctor took a seat across from Jason, sitting the cup on the table, crossing one knee other the other, which brought attention to the holes in his knees. His hair wild and unkempt.
"Don't look so nervous. You have nothing to fear of me. You should know this, Jason." What a greeting, yet, those blue eyes looked amused and annoyed.
Jason wasn't worried about the area. He'd been born here, after all. About three blocks north in Gotham General. These streets were just as much a part of him as he was a part of them and if anyone tried to question it, all one had to do was listen to his accent. It was all Bowery, save for when he bothered to change it.
He wasn't proud of his upbringing, but he wasn't ashamed of it, either. He knew who he was and where he'd come from. And now, as of the week before, he was trying to drag himself somewhere else. Hell or high water, as his mom used to say.
Hell or high water.
He looked over the top of his book as that door finally jingled, taking in the older man with appreciation. The suits he wore at work were okay and the clothes he wore to Pandora's were nice enough...but this suited the man so much better. Which was impressive, because he'd been fairly certain that skinny jeans didn't suit anyone.
He put his book away as Jon settled into the seat across from him, smirking softly at the complete lack of social norms. Some people (most people, honestly) probably found it abrupt or even insulting, but Jason had only ever appreciated the directness.
"I don't fear you, Jon. I fear losing you. There is a difference. Good morning. Just roll out of bed?" He gave that mop of curls a pointed look, his fingers twitching to bury themselves into the strands to tame them a little.
Oh, Jon knew that bowery accent when he first heard it when they were introduced. He had lived in the same rent controlled building since he left the dorms, it was how he knew his neighbors, as much as he wished he didn't. The Bowery was everything Arlen was not, sure it was unsafe, but he hadn't been safe in the country either, so why care?
He lived by the saying of 'don't start none, won't be none.' The few times the cops knocked on his door over any of his neighbors, he denied even knowing them and closed the door. He trusted the criminals he lived around more than the GCPD.
How he was still wearing skinny jeans he bought in college, who even knew, but he was most comfortable in his beat up weekend attire. Jon had always been the type to just start speaking if he wanted too. With this, he wanted too.
He didn't even go get coffee first, he sat the cup on the table and looked at Jason with those tired blue eyes. "Good morning to you as well, and no, I've been up for hours. Now, why would you think you would lose me? So long as you don't join my classes and are over 25. I see no reason for this to change things."
Over the years he'd added basic treatment of wounds left behind. Touches that Jon could tolerate to help ground him as he came back up. More often than not, their aftercare tended to be Jason sitting up against the bed in the room, Jon encouraged to lay in his lap -or at least near him- while Jason lightly played in his curls and read aloud from a book they'd picked out together.
This month was no different. Jon let go of those last little slips of control and Jason smiled and leaned forward to kiss along exhaustion lines, murmuring how good he was, how well he'd taken everything Jason had to give him. He'd released the man from the ropes, keeping him close so he didn't fall at the sudden change in position. Moving over to the bed, he made sure Jon took a few sips of the water bottle he'd left there just for this before he'd started massaging abused shoulders into once more accepting blood flow.
"How many chapters tonight? Just the one? Or are you going to actually take advantage of the fact that we have the room all night for once?" He smirked, knowing full well that Jon was never actually going to stay. It didn't stop him from adding incentive, his voice a teasing sing-song that he was pretty sure was going to earn him an eye roll. "We could get to them actually getting to Vegas...."
Cleaning the wounds was something he didn't fight, he insisted on doing the same on the few rare nights he has hurt Jason in return. Those are bad nights that usually end much better than they start. If asked before all of this if he was attracted to muscular men, he would have said no, but getting to relax against that strong chest against the thick thighs? He had been converted.
The book was already on the table, if Jon or Jason kept it to bring each time didn't matter, but he enjoyed it. Occasionally, he would read while Jason played with his hair, making voices for each character. Tonight would likely be one of those nights.
A huffed noise, from how stiff his shoulders were, escaped as he dropped a bit against Jason's strong chest. His wrists might bruise, but he never minded that, always reminding that he wore an old wristwatch, and a leather cuff for a reason. He'd blame being in college in the early 2000s if anyone questioned the cuff. Moving easily with him to the bed as Jon took a second to pop his shoulder before taking a few drinks. Once he was sitting on the bed so that Jason could check over any marks. Jon reached for the book, those icy blue eyes peered up and rolled as expected.
"Lovely as the offer always sounds, I have work in the morning." Opening the book to skip to where they left off. "You are always welcome to stay since it is booked for the night. I don't care. We will get to Vegas when we get there, why rush it?" He always talked a little more after a scene than he ever does before. As if the rush of pain uncovers the person buried under all that stress.
no subject
"Mmm, no rush. A little greedy, maybe, but I'm plenty patient." He waited until Jon had situated himself somewhere comfortable, ignoring the offer to let him stay without his client. He'd never taken said offer just as Jon had never taken the offer to stay, but it was always appreciated.
As soon as the book opened and Jon was comfortable, Jason sank his fingers into dark curls. Before, he'd use that handful as a handle to wrench the man to exactly where he wanted him, but that time had passed and now Jason's fingers were gentle as he stroked them through the softness. Any snags were carefully worked free and occasionally Jason would stroke his fingers against the skin of Jon's neck or jaw.
It was a shorter chapter that night, but Jason was satisfied with how Jon was coming back to himself and instead of insisting on another one, he instead just leaned down to kiss combed through curls.
"Text me when you get home. I'll call for check in tomorrow. Make sure to eat something, I'll be asking about it. It will probably be around two, but if you're busy you can call me back when you have a minute. Got it, Doc? Don't make me call every five minutes, you know I will." He'd done it before.
no subject
"Plenty greedy, my ravenous friend. Though, I give you that, you can be very patient." The professor would sometimes jokingly call Jason a friend after the pain when the masks were down. It was more his way of thinking than really thinking they are. The stroking hand in his hair almost put him to sleep once in the reading, but that was fine. He enjoyed the feel of it.
When the chapter was finished, he marked the page and held it up to Jason, he'd let him keep the book until next month. Just so it didn't get lost in his stacks at home.
Pushing himself up after the kiss landed in his messy curls, a light, softer look offered back at the younger as he reached for the t-shirt and button up he had worn in. He dressed casually whenever he came, he could replace a t-shirt he would rather not replace a suit. Tugging on the black shirt, he nodded. Slipping his watch back on next. "I will text as soon as I get home. Don't worry. I've not forgotten in a few months." Pants grabbed next as he stood doing up his belt again.
Shaking his head amused, curls bouncing a little from the way Jason broke up the clusters. "Christ, never do that again." He gave a small laugh turning to ruffle Jason's hair, and even giving him a quick kiss. Taking out his phone then to transfer the funds. He always does before he leaves. "I'll remember to eat, good luck with whatever tomorrow is, I'll see you next time, Jason."
Grabbing his boots to slip on, he never ties them before he leaves, to head for the door.
Checking in was a Dom's expectation, but he'll admit that he checked in a little more on his Doc.
He watched the lanky man dress, occasionally reaching out to stroke his fingers over skin before it was once more covered with clothing, and then he was leaning up into that quick kiss. "Any time you need me, Doc. Just a phone call away." Then the door was closed and Jason was left to scrub down the room and return the keys to Pandora. Somewhere in there, his phone buzzed to let him know that Jon had made it home alright and Jason had replied with a simple 'Sleep well, Doc. Talk to you tomorrow' before he'd hit play on his music to finish up his cleaning.
The next morning found him tired but pleasantly centered considering he was about to do something that terrified him. Still, centered or not, it took several deep breaths before he was able to actually convince himself to walk through the GSU doors, hiking his brand new bag up a little higher on his shoulder as he moved through the crowd of fresh faced freshmen. He was the oldest by far and more than a few of his peers gave him curious looks as they were walked through their orientation tour of the campus.
The first day of a new year was always hell for Crane. He once loved walking into this building, knowing he would be learning and one day become somebody. Once he pulled off becoming the youngest professor in the school's history, that was when the magic died for him. He saw behind the curtains, and it was nothing he had expected. Rude coworkers who belittled him for his lack of modern cut suits or spending frivolously on making himself look better. Being bullied was nothing new for Jonathan Crane. He just expected it to be different here.
It wasn't. Added with the fact that half of his students didn't even try? The doctor had been bittered within a few years of getting the role. He had only reached tenure the year before, much to the displeasure of his former mentor and his cronies. Crane kept to himself, worked, and then went home and work more or read. He didn't socialize and he rarely took excuses.
The freshmen were being given their tour, but the other grades were being given their first classes. It just so happened that it was Crane's second class when the freshmen were led through. "As I said, you turn in any assignment, even a minute late, and do not have a doctor's note or a death certificate. I will shred it. If you fall asleep in my class? You will be asked to leave, and I will not allow you to make up any points. Sleep is for home or out in your cars. Not in my classroom. I also do not give extra credit. Don't ask." He was still talking as the guide whispered to the group.
"That's professor Crane, he's brilliant, but just hope you don't get his class." One of the others, rolled their eyes.
"Crane's not that bad, if you do your work and don't mess around. He was my professor for two years." The first tour group leader rolling their eyes at the second one. "Okay, follow along."
Then, when he was nine, he'd gone into the Gotham foster system and no one bothered to look at him again.
The dream of going to college was one he'd never dared to have, and yet...there he was. It had taken blood, sweat, and tears as well as more years than he really wanted to think about, but he was there. Taking that freshman tour. His skin crawled with the tight press of nervous teenagers around him, but he wasn't going to let himself fall to the back and not be able to hear the guides.
Or hear the familiar voice that made his breath catch in his throat. The accent was different, husky Georgian drawl replaced by a crisp Bristol posh...but it was him. His Doc, lecturing a hall of students that looked simultaneously terrified and bored of him. He didn't stare. Didn't smile, though it threatened the corners of his lips. He saw the man, let his eyes take in the scene, and then smoothly transitioned back to the guides.
He was a professional, after all. He wasn't going to out his Doc in front of his students. He did, however, take a moment as they moved on to take note of exactly where the classroom was and the subject that was stamped above it.
Psychology
Fascinating. Suddenly, the press of the students around him didn't seem so crushing after all.
The tour ended not long before Jason was supposed to call for a check in, just as Jason had planned it. While the rest of the freshmen scattered to find their first actual classes of the day, Jason headed for the little coffee shop/cafe vender that was tucked off to one side of the public commons. It was quiet and he appreciated that quiet as he got himself a tea and a muffin, then made his way over to a table before pulling out his phone and pressing 'call'.
It would be unethical for one. He still cared about the ethics of his professional role these days.
Standing before his class, dressed in a brown suit. Every mark from the night before hidden. Those blue eyes steeled, his hair styled as it usually was at the start of their scenes. The curls always had a mild of their own. No one would guess what the professor gets up too when he has the money and time. His natural accent hidden, as he firmly felt no one would take him seriously with his natural accent. Yet, he never tried to kill that smooth southern accent. It came in handy now and then.
Hours later, he was in his office. Reading a novel at his desk as he worked on his 4th cup of coffee, and a muffin he had grabbed earlier. Seeing the familiar picture and name pop up, he couldn't help the fond smile and rolling his eyes as he answered. His accent back to the Georgian as he pushed looked up to make sure his office door was shut.
"I'm eattin' I promise. I didn't forget today, Jason. Did you take care of whatever it was you were doing?"
no subject
Leaning back in his chair, he let his smile be heard in his chuckle.
"Good." Praise for the action, not to the man. He knew how flustered and uncomfortable Jon could get if praised directly outside of a scene. But a job well done was something that could be commented on without shining a light on the insecurities that his sub tried so hard to hide away. "Food is important. Have you had any actual water today, or has it all been coffee?"
He arched a brow even though Jon wasn't there to see it, but it was as fond as ever as he sipped at his own hot, caffeinated beverage.
"I'm actually on a break. I've got the next 40 minutes to myself, so I wanted to check in. How are you? Did you sleep well?"
no subject
"You don't like when I lie to you." He replied with ease. "I'll get some water once I'm off work. Alright?" He offered, amusement in his tone. Jason knew how to walk around his moodiness and that helped. It made him feel better without feeling like he was being handled with kid gloves.
"Ironically, I have the same amount of time. Imagine that." He didn't think much of it besides the irony of it. "Slept about as well as I ever do, but I am fine. Work is annoying as always, but that won't change. Did you sleep well?" Even if Jason was the dom, sometimes Jon liked to check in too. Wanting to return those extra perks in the only way he knew how.
no subject
Well, his dear Doc was a bit of a service sub in disguise.
"Mmm. I'd like to think that anything has the potential to be better. Who knows, maybe something interesting will happen.
As for me...not really. I hate crowds and today marks the first day that I have to be in the middle of a very crowded place on a daily basis. It kept me up a bit later than I wanted to be, even as tired as you left me."
no subject
He would fight against such a label, but it was very true.
"I sometimes wish I could see through those rose-tinted lenses you see the world through." Something he has said before, always the pessimist when it came to his world views. "Something else we share in common. Well, I wish you the best with whatever this new venture is. Just remember, even if it is annoying, it can be rewarding too." A flush taking over his face some at the last bite. "The things you say..."
no subject
But Jason would miss him. Jason didn't want to break their contract. And this was just a check in call, right? As long as he was honest before Jon scheduled their next scene, it would be okay. At least, that was what he was going to tell himself.
So, instead of chuckling about Jon's addiction to coffee, he let his voice slip into that lower register he used when they were alone and Jon was panting and shaking and Jason was soothing him through something that would be pure agony for most, but for them was foreplay. "Mmm, that blush I can hear in your voice is music to my ears, Doc." He let his words and his tone play a little in Jon's mind before he grinned and eased up his teasing enough to not fluster the man too much.
"Don't forget your water, alright? If you need me, I'm only a phone call away. Remember that. See you next session."
no subject
That lower register sent a jolt up his spine. Oh god, not here. "Come on now, I have to return to work soon enough. Must you?" No real bite, but the embarrassment still in his tone. He hated how easily flustered he could get. It was all due to his upbringing and that ignored religious trauma.
"I won't, I promise. Same to you, even if I do not answer right away. Good luck with whatever it is. I know you will do good. Ignore the crowds, all that matters is you and your success, remember that."
Which, for the most part, went smoothly enough. He only had one class that could be considered 'close' to Doc's lecture hall and he pointedly didn't let himself linger to listen to that strong voice behind the closed door.
He was a professional. Jon was a client.
But he still made a point of stopping the next following morning before the first posted class time listed, not to linger or see the man, but instead to simply leave a half frozen bottle of water on the podium, a paper towel neatly folded to catch the condensation.
At least there would be a new episode of Elvira tonight. That always helps, they are so rare these days. Jon didn't pay for his cable, his sketchy neighbor had set him up with it in exchange for helping one of his kids with her math homework when he and his wife got fed up. It wasn't a terrible exchange, the girl was at least smart, her parents? Not so much.
The next morning, when he arrived, his classes always started a little later as he refused to have a class at the crack of dawn. No, he opted to stay later, allowing for some of those students to try to squeeze in that class on top of their others. Seeing the bottle of water, he stared at it a moment like a snake about to strike. What in the world?
Moving the bottle of water and its paper towel into his office as he had a cup of coffee with him, he knew he'd have to keep an eye on whatever that was. He would drink it, though, Jason would likely call later and ask if he had time. This was how his first week back would go, the frightening his new students with how strict he was. Promises of no extra credit, as most of them never cracked the syllabus and learned that was a lie. This was one of those weeks when he wishes he got paid early to call upon his dom, but he had another week before that, and bills due before that as well.
Sneaking in to place that half frozen water on Doc's podium became a guilty pleasure, a smile on his lips every time he slipped into the quiet lecture hall. He never let anyone see him, didn't linger as he left, and completely left his Doc's office door alone. Just leaving the water was already crossing a bit of a line, if he were to be honest with himself. Hopefully not one that would lose him his favorite client, but instead one that might coax a smile from the other man should he find out.
That was the hope, anyway.
By the time Friday came around, Jason was ready for the weekend. His nerves were a little shot from all the hustle and bustle and people. His schedule was empty, but that wasn't a shock. Once he'd enrolled in the semester, he'd stopped taking most of his casual clients. He still had a small handful of those he'd think about accepting....but mostly, he'd just kept Doc. Not that Doc would be calling him any time soon. They'd had a session just five days before and it was always at least a month between calls. He wasn't expecting a call now.
Even if he really, really wanted one. Getting his hands on his sub sounded like a wonderful way to relax after this hellish week. It was a thought that lingered....and very well may have been the reason he wasn't quite as careful as he usually was as he slipped into that empty lecture hall and set the brand new orange and black Stanley onto the podium. No more condensation and the ice he put in it would last all day, encouraging the man to drink more. He hoped. And, if Jon was particularly observant, there was a thin engraving on the inside of the handle.
Dearest Doc, coffee is not water -J
no subject
Though, Jon would never share why.
He had arrived to work late on that Friday, late for him was still before his students would arrive. His messenger bag over his shoulder, a cup of coffee in hand along with a cheap breakfast sandwich as it was a rare hungry morning. Seeing the Stanley cup on the podium he looked at it for a good moment like it was going to attack. What in the hell is this?
He had a few students who he had heard bragging about the prices of the cups like that one. The Professor thought it was mostly stupid, Stanley was a good brand. He had an old second hand vintage one he used on cold days when he wanted his coffee to stay warm, but this? Someone spent money on him, and there was no denying that.
Tempted to throw it away, he fought the urge, as he left it where it was to get ready for class. He had left it there through the first lecture, finally as his first class let out, one of the more chipper students that didn't really fear him bounced over complimenting the cup, letting him know it was a rare one, but one that suited him. Before he could even say anything else she had her phone out showing him all the accesories that could be bought for it.
"It's a cup... why would anyone need all of that?"
"It's for style Doc! Come on, you have to know that."
"Not really, but thank you, Miss Peterson."
"Of course! You really should get one of the pumpkin tops, it would be SO cute."
"That's quite enough." He sighed as she finally headed off and waved back to him. He had to fight not to roll his eyes.
It was then, due to how she had shifted the cup that he saw the engraving. "What..." Was all he managed to say. He had less than 10 minutes before his next class, so he couldn't message his scene partner. No, that message was clear. He knew the names and faces of everyone in his class, so he would have noticed Jason there.
When lunch rolled around, a message was sent to Jason.
I believe we need to talk, Jason. Before I cause you any anxiety, I am not terminating our contract, nor am I setting up a session. We simply need to speak. I found the engraving. I know it's you.
no subject
Doc was probably at least a little irritated with him....but he'd specifically said that he wasn't terminating their contract and that was the important part.
Full naming me, huh? Yeah, I don't blame you. I should have said something as soon as I found out, but I didn't know how or if you'd break our contract and I wasn't ready to say good bye to you. I won't ask for forgiveness, I crossed a line, but I will dare to hope for understanding?
I'm in my break between my AM and PM classes for another hour, but then I'll be in class until 7. Tomorrow is free, once I sleep until noon. Lunch?
They'd never met up outside of Pandora's Box, but that was bound to change with him attending classes there now. It may as well change on their terms.
He should have put his phone down, but after a moment he smirked around the end of the pen in his mouth and sent a quick follow up.
Drink your water.
no subject
Irritated was the right word for it. Furious would have been termination, but many things irritated Dr. Jonathan Crane. That was a fact of life.
Did you expect anything less? Jason, we can talk it over later. As it is, I know you are of age, and you are not my student. That and the years we have worked together are what keeps me from doing what you fear. Crossed a line? Maybe. More, I have questions.
That works, I have grading to do tonight as it is. 2pm, how about that place down in the Bowery, the gentrified place they built in the old cannery?
It had coffee that had good reviews, Jon also slept in on days he was off, so that was fine. If Arkham called tomorrow, he'd say he was sick. Jerry wouldn't bitch too much.
I'm drinking the damn water, stop worrying. Focus on your classes.
no subject
The man had chosen to come back to him over the years, so it must not have been too bad, and that was good enough for him.
The suggestion of lunching spots was an interesting one and Jason arched a brow as he quickly pulled the place up on his laptop. It was...a little kitschy, but it looked like it was at least trying to pay homage to the area it was built in.
2 pm tomorrow. I'll answer anything you ask and respect any boundary you have for me. If you want to return the cup, you can, but I will ask you to please keep it. It was a gift, with no strings attached. Not even water flavored ones.
~~~
Sleep was fickle that night, but the next day found him tucked into a little table at 2 PM. He'd specifically requested a table that was a little out of the way, but the space was set up in such a way that Doc would still be able to see him when he came in. They'd have privacy as long as they kept their conversation between them and no one raised their voice.
He was really hoping that no one was going to raise their voice.
Dressed in a simple pair of dark jeans and an old, comfortable band shirt, it was probably the most casual that Jon had ever seen him. Hell, it was probably the best lighting that the man had seen him in, too. Pandora kept her establishment and her workers safe, but mood lighting was still very much a thing. A book and a large mug of what promised to be tea completed the look, though he was flipping the pages considerably slower than he usually did.
He was nervous.
no subject
The location might be sketchy as hell, but it was picked due to Jon living down the street from it in a shitty two-bedroom apartment. The professor had long learned that getting along with some of his sketchy neighbors meant that no one really fucked with him. Otherwise, someone else would step up and handle it. He'd not been mugged coming home in a long while. Though, he did still keep his gun in the truck, as one never knew. Gotham was still Gotham, after all.
Jon had managed three hours of sleep, which for him was pretty good. He survived on naps when not put to sleep after an orgasm and a lot of pain. Those nights, he'd sleep like the dead. Making his way towards the door, he stopped to stoke the head of his young bird. "Keep an eye on the place, Nightmare. I'm trusting you." The bird croaked a simple 'Nevermore' as Jon headed out, with the Stanley Cup full of water. Lest Jason worried more.
He arrived about 10 minutes after Jason, he was always late, even to their sessions. Work was the ONLY exception to that rule, but one could set a clock by his tardiness, always 10 minutes, rarely more unless Gotham traffic was a bitch. He usually wore his nicer street clothes to Pandora's or part of a work suit, as he knew he'd be turned away if he showed up ratty. Today, though, he didn't mind. The doctor took a seat across from Jason, sitting the cup on the table, crossing one knee other the other, which brought attention to the holes in his knees. His hair wild and unkempt.
"Don't look so nervous. You have nothing to fear of me. You should know this, Jason." What a greeting, yet, those blue eyes looked amused and annoyed.

He wasn't proud of his upbringing, but he wasn't ashamed of it, either. He knew who he was and where he'd come from. And now, as of the week before, he was trying to drag himself somewhere else. Hell or high water, as his mom used to say.

"I don't fear you, Jon. I fear losing you. There is a difference. Good morning. Just roll out of bed?" He gave that mop of curls a pointed look, his fingers twitching to bury themselves into the strands to tame them a little.

Now, why would you think you would lose me? So long as you don't join my classes and are over 25. I see no reason for this to change things."
